Overview

Hart Solar project located in Michigan’s Oceana County, the development is expected to offer 100 megawatts (MWAC) of nameplate capacity. Hart Solar is currently in construction with commercial operation anticipated in 2026. Hart Solar is available to municipal, cooperative, commercial and industrial choice customers and particularly those within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market. This development can provide energy, capacity and renewable energy credits (RECs) depending on need. NorthStar Clean Energy’s in-house energy marketing team stands ready to help customers develop a competitive pricing structure to meet their specific interests and timeline.

Solutions

Hart Solar is available to municipal, cooperative, commercial and industrial choice customers and particularly those within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market. This development can provide energy, capacity and renewable energy credits (RECs) depending on need. NorthStar Clean Energy’s in-house energy marketing team stands ready to help customers develop a competitive pricing structure to meet their specific interests and timeline.

The project has secured options to lease over 1,000 acres of land. Phase I and II environmental site assessments (ESA) are complete. The project is preparing a Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) joint permit application (JPA) that will enable project construction.

The Hart Solar Development naturally fits with NorthStar Clean Energy’s growing renewable energy portfolio and capabilities, including:

  • Our position as a long-term power plant owner-operator.
  • Capabilities as a renewable energy developer and constructor.
  • An expanding renewables portfolio including the Flambeau Solar project (Wisconsin), Delta Solar Project (Michigan), Northwest Ohio Wind Project (Ohio), and the Aviator Wind Project (Texas).
  • Our project financing arm that enables capture of available investment tax credits and other benefits.

Key Goals & Results

The project is expected to generate more than 100 construction jobs in the central Michigan region, more than $20 million of regional economic activity during construction and annual landowner lease payments and tax revenues throughout the project’s operating life.

Significant reductions in criteria air pollutants, water use, and wastewater discharge versus other forms of generation will also be realized. NorthStar Clean Energy will also be looking to align this project with opportunities in agriculture (e.g., animal-based grazing) and sustainability (adding/creating bee and butterfly habitat).

The development offers short- and long-term renewable energy purchase agreements for customers. Contact Todd Mortimer at todd.mortimer@cmsenergy.com or 517-788-0493.
