Overview

Kalamazoo River Generating Station is a 75-megawatt (MW) natural gas fired facility located in Comstock, Michigan, near Kalamazoo.

Kalamazoo River Generating Station is a simple-cycle, natural gas fired generating plant. The plant’s electric output is sold into the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market and provides VAR support to the transmission system. The GE Frame 7E Simple Cycle Turbine commercial operation began in 1999.

Solutions

In 2015 and 2016, plant leaders completed several upgrades to improve efficiency and increase the plant’s output during high electric demand days.

In August 2018, a mile-long natural gas supply pipe was installed under nearby Interstate 94. Connected to the Panhandle transmission line in fall 2018, the pipeline is owned and operated by Consumers Energy. The connection enables firm natural gas deliveries, allowing year-round operation.

As of 2025, there are 5 NSCE employees and 2 NSCE contract employees.
